I don’t do much sports writing. Growing up I played basketball, baseball and tennis. What I watched yesterday, Thursday, August 8th at the Olympics in Paris, 2024…will go down in history as one of the greatest comebacks in Olympic basketball I’ve witnessed in over 40 years of life.
I remember the Dream Teams of old. But the margin the USA was down to Serbia in Paris was 17 points at one time during the first half. Steph (the Chef) Curry, Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant and LeBron James put on a performance that eclipses many accomplished performances I’ve seen in the Olympics I’ve personally witnessed.
To look at some stats Serbia outscored the US 54 to 43 in the first half. Steph Curry played 33 minutes, shot 12 of 19 from the field, hit clutch shots at the end of the game and went 9 of 14 from beyond the arc.
Joel Embiid played gritty, tough, and scored a spat of points that kept the US in the game as much as Curry did during the first half and in the 3rd Quarter. But it was Curry that shined this game mostly. That and when the game was finally taken over in the 4th Quarter, the final 10 minutes, Curry, Durant, and LeBron James cemented a victory.
Curry’s 36 points was incredible. It is a great example of the never quit mentality the US men have displayed over the course of the Olympics.
I was so impressed and feel blessed to be alive to witness one of the most talented shooters in basketball history help lead the US in the 2024 Olympic games. I am thankful for all the players, LeBron, Durant, Embiid, Anthony Edward’s, the list goes on. The grit it takes to come back and in the 4th Quarter go 32 points to just 15 by Serbia was amazing.
I’m proud for this men’s team and Saturday against home team France will be a tough matchup. Yet I have confidence. The no quit mentality is a display of toughness. When you get hit, you get back up. The US got hit in the mouth the first half but like many athletes know, it’s never over until its over.
Kevin Durant said it was one of the best games he’s been a part of. It was one of the best games, I know for a fact, I’ve ever seen.
